LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - The University of Kansas began its basketball season early Saturday by recognizing fellow Jayhawker Wilt Chamberlain, who died Tuesday.

Before Kansas' Midnight Madness scrimmage game began, a crowd of 16,300 people watched the spotlight on Chamberlain's No. 13 jersey and listened to parts of a speech he gave while visiting the university two years ago.

The speech was followed by a standing ovation and then a moment of silence.

The event, known as Late Night with (coach) Roy Williams, had the team's 14 members split seven on seven. They played a 20-minute half and a 10-minute half.

Blue defeated Crimson 54 to 31.

Among the highlights: Junior guard Kenny Gregory scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds and freshman forward Drew Gooden also chipped in 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Blue.

Coach Roy Williams said he's excited to start the season.

'"If you want to play basketball you've got to play extra hard," he said. "Our depth is something we can use to our advantage. I'm really anxious to get started. They are a great group to work with."

Center Eric Chenowith, a junior, led Crimson with seven points and nine rebounds.

Senior forward Ashante Johnson scored six points and had five rebounds. At last year's event, he injured his knee, which hurt him the whole season.
