Most Outstanding Player: Lew Alcindor, UCLA

In a virtual replay of the 1967 Final Four, with one Ohio school (Ohio State) replacing another (Dayton), the result was also the same. UCLA gained more than a measure of revenge with its annihilation of unbeaten No. 1 Houston, which had taken over the top spot after the teams' famous showdown at the Houston Astrodome. The championship game was a formality; the Tar Heels played like they had no chance, and the margin of victory was a title-game record until 1990. Alcindor's Final Four totals: 53 points and 34 rebounds.

Surprise Guests: Ohio State beat No. 5 Kentucky 82-81 in Lexington on Dave Sorenson's 5-footer with three seconds left to reach the Final Four.

Surprise Performance: Houston's Elvin Hayes averaged 41 points and 25.3 rebounds in his first three games and went for 34 and 16 in the third-place game, but UCLA's Lynn Shackleford held him to just 10 points (3-for-10 from the field) and five rebounds playing a diamond-and-one.

Oops!: Houston manager Howie Lorch was arrested just before the final for ticket scalping.

Future First-Round Picks: UCLA—Lew Alcindor (1969, 1st, Milwaukee), Lucius Allen (1969, 3rd, Seattle); Ohio State—Bill Hosket (1968, 10th, New York); Houston—Elvin Hayes (1968, 1st, San Diego), Don Chaney (1968, 12th, Boston).
