Big Dance at a Glance:
First-round wrap-up

At the Water Cooler
What happened Friday
Two words for Washington coach Bob Bender: "double team" ... Utah has won 23 straight games and is as hot as ... Duke punished FAMU by 41, but we expected more ... Any more complaints about Charleston's 8 seed?

Evansville let many of us down, but Ace Marcus Wilson put on a show ... Speaking of shows, does Wally Szczerbiak's 43-point performance mean he's that good, or the rest of Miami (Ohio) is that shallow? ... Meanwhile, Miami (Florida) looked like they were on a mission ... Remember the date: Temple shot nearly 50% from behind the arc ...

Wisconsin (32 points) may have put on the worst NCAA Tournament performance ever ... Oklahoma out-executed, out-smarted and out-hustled Arizona, reminding many of the 'Cats of the lean early '90s ... Lamar Odom, we hardly knew ye.

Name to know
Oklahoma F Eduardo Najera , who led the 13th-seeded Sooners to a 61-60 upset of Arizona, outplaying the Wildcats' much-hyped Jason Terry and notching a game-high 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Top storyline
Offense or just plain offensive? Wisconsin should be banned from future tournaments for scoring 32 points vs. SW Mo. St. On the other end of the spectrum, Duke (99), Kansas (95) and Utah (80) ripped off points with ease.

Random speculation
Maryland's Steve Francis will lead all scorers on Saturday.

Read a new "Dance at a Glance" Thursday through Monday throughout the NCAA Tournament.

    First-round awards

If 32 teams' worth of attrition in 36 hours isn't enough to merit a first-round awards ceremony, I'm not sure what would:

Most outstanding player: Harold Arceneaux, Weber State
It wasn't just The Show's 36-point performance. It was the significance of those points -- leading to a blind-side upset of North Carolina. It was the beauty of the scoring -- from long-range jumpers to off-balance slashes to the basket. A once-a-tournament display. Honorable mention: Wally Szczerbiak, Miami (Ohio)

All-first-round team: Arceneaux; Szczerbiak; Desmond Mason, Oklahoma State; Kirk Haston, Indiana; Eduardo Najera, Oklahoma
All led their teams to unexpected first-round wins.

Best coaching job: Kelvin Sampson, Oklahoma
The Sooners owned the interior and didn't melt under the pressure of standing eye-to-eye with 4-seed Arizona. The 'Cats blinked. Honorable mention: Ron Abegglen, Weber State

Worst coaching job: Bob Bender, Washington
Throughout Szczerbiak's 43-point blitzkreig -- Miami's only offense, mind you -- it didn't ever seem to cross Bender's mind to consistently double-team him. Honorable mention: Dick Bennett, Wisconsin

    Biggest surprise: Wisconsin's 32 points
We knew that the Badgers were "defensive-oriented," but we didn't know they had a thing against offense, too. Honorable mention: Minnesota's suspension of four players

Shining moment: Miami and Ole Miss winning their schools' first NCAA Tournament games ever
Knowing you wrote history makes a win much sweeter. Honorable mention: Weber State's frantic celebration after knocking off UNC

Best game: Weber State over North Carolina
Sweeping these awards, this game had clutch performances from both teams, especially UNC senior Ademola Okulaja, who has now seen the best and the worst in his career. Honorable mention: Oklahoma shocks Arizona

Worst game: SW Missouri St. over Wisconsin
The Badgers scored 32 points. Enough said. Honorable mention: Tennessee (30% FG) over Delaware (29% FG)

Momentum heading into round two: Maryland
Obliterated the Valpo mystique with the reality of a wicked press and three awesome options on offense: Steve Francis, Terence Morris and Laron Profit. Honorable mention: UConn, Gonzaga, Indiana, Miami and Utah

    No mo': Stanford
Looked rusty and uninspired against Alcorn State. The Cardinal better take hungry Gonzaga a bit more seriously. Honorable mention: SW Missouri State, Tennessee

    So much for these Cinderellas

More would-be Cinderellas joined the heap of "one-and-dones":

Rhode Island: The Rams let the game go at the end of the second half, then were just overwhelmed in OT. We expected a bit more from Lamar Odom, tabbed by many as the best player in the country. The Glance really liked chunky URI junior reserve Ed Brown, who had a surprisingly deft passing touch to go along with his 275-lb. (listed, hardly observed) frame.

Kent: Those rare times when Temple can complement its great defense with outside shooting, the upset just isn't going to happen.

Delaware: Played solid D (or at least benefited from horrible Tennessee shooting), but the Blue Hens couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Evansville: Perhaps there was a bit of an underestimation of Kansas' skills and momentum lately.

    Saturday at a Glance
Matchup to Watch: Stanford (2) vs. Gonzaga (10) , (Seattle)
The Pac-10 is reeling after three first-round upset losses. Stanford carries the league flag against confident Gonzaga, enjoying near-home-court advantage.

Under the Glare: Harold Arceneaux, Weber State
"The Show" (36 pts vs. UNC) must deliver another brilliant performance.
