Shannon was not the best point guard entering the NCAA Tournament, but unlike Utah's Andre Miller, UCLA's Baron Davis, Oklahoma State's Mike Gottlieb or Arkansas State's Chico Fletcher, he's still around.
Shannon's a senior on a very young team, and his steadiness has helped the Gators into the Sweet 16. In Florida's first two games, a win over Penn and an overtime win over Weber State, Shannon contributed in very different ways.
In the 75-61 win over Penn, Shannon has 10 points (one of five Gators in double figures) and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Then, against Weber State, he had seven assists and five steals in the 82-74 victory.
Shannon may be best known because he has been successful despite the fact he has played his entire career, essentially, with one eye. The West Palm Beach native had the last parts of his damaged right eye removed last September and was fitted with a prosthetic eye in September.
The surgery barely slowed him down. He started the Gators' final 21 games of the season and has become the Gators' career leader in steals, with 202.
