DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Freshman Susan Moran scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and St. Joseph's shot 54 percent in an 83-72 win over Tulane in the first round of the NCAA tournament's East Regional Saturday night.

Angela Zampella and Melissa Coursey scored 18 each and Jana Lichnerova added 16 for the 11th-seeded Hawks, who made 30-of-55 shots. Zampella and Coursey combined to sink 7-of-13 shots from 3-point range. Zampella also dished out 13 assists.

Grace Daley scored 19 points to lead sixth-seeded Tulane.

The Hawks (23-7) led 37-36 at halftime and mounted an 11-4 spurt over the opening four minutes of the second half.

Tulane's Sarah Goree sank a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 48-43 but St. Joseph's scored eight straight points over the next 1:22. Zampella's third 3-pointer of the game gave the Hawks their biggest lead at 56-43 with 13:32 left.

The Green Wave (24-6) employed a full-court trapping defense thereafter. But Tulane never got closer than five the rest of the way as the Hawks beat the press continuously and generated short shots with their offense.

St. Joseph's shot 58 percent (14-of-24) in the second half and made 5 of 6 shots from the free-throw line in the final 1:12 to seal the victory.

St. Joseph's won their twelfth straight game and will make just its fifth second-round NCAA tournament appearance on Monday.

The Green Wave built a 12-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game but couldn't put the Hawks away.

The Hawks forced six Tulane turnovers to storm back into the game in the final 7 1/2 minutes of the first half.

Zampella had 10 points in the last 4:35 of the half. Her 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining trimmed Tulane's lead to one at 34-33. Moran's putback with 52.9 seconds left gave St. Joseph's its first lead of the game at 35-34.
