AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Stacy Frese scored 31 points and Iowa State withstood Santa Clara's torrid start to beat the Broncos 74-61 Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Playing before its largest crowd ever, 12,337, fourth-seeded Iowa State (23-7) won a game that wasn't nearly as easy as the score indicated and moved into a second-round game Sunday night against fifth-seeded Oregon, a 65-56 winner over Cincinnati.

No. 13 seed Santa Clara (22-7) hit four of its first five shots in racing to a 13-0 lead and led by 14 before 19th-ranked Iowa State rallied behind Frese and Megan Taylor, who bounced back from a scoreless first half to hit two key 3-pointers.

Iowa State trailed just 38-34 at halftime, fell behind by eight early in the second half, then went on an 18-5 run to finally get control of the game.

Taylor's 3-pointer from the right of key gave Iowa State its first lead at 51-49 with 11:14 to play, and she nailed another 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 55-51.

Santa Clara missed 13 straight shots before Annie Garrison converted a three-point play off a turnaround with 4:06 left, cutting the lead to 57-55. But the Broncos would get no closer.

Frese scored on a drive to start a 7-0 run and Iowa State closed it out by making 10 straight free throws - six by Frese and two each by Taylor and Angie Welle.

Stephanie Rogers led Santa Clara with 18 points, Brook Staebell had 16 and Jessica Banford and Garrison each scored 12.

Rogers had 15 points in the first half, including two early 3-pointers to key the Broncos' fast start. But she missed her first seven shots in the second half and didn't score in the period until making a 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining.

Santa Clara shot 25 percent in the second half and missed 20 of its final 23 shots.

Tracy Gahan added 12 points for Iowa State and Taylor finished with 10.
