RUSTON, La. (AP) -- - An injury to starting forward Andrea Garner provided the spark Penn State needed to advance to the second round of the NCAA West Regionals.

Helen Darling scored 21 points and Penn State outshot Virginia 27-11 from the foul line in eliminating the Lady Cavaliers 82-69 in the first round Friday night.

"When Andrea dislocated a kneecap in the first half, my teammates looked to me to lead them," Darling said. "I knew I had to set an example with my leadership because Andrea and I are such good friends. I worred about her but I knew I had to carry on."

Garner's substitute, Maren Walseth, led Penn State (22-7) with 22 points and nine rebounds. Lisa Shepherd added 13 points and Shawnta Vanzant had 11 points.

Virginia (20-9) was led by Monick Foote with 13 points, Erin Stovall with 12 and DeMya Walker with 11.

"I thought we had a great start and played really well until about midway in the first half and then we stopped our ball movement on offense and had some bad breakdowns on defense. We were just too inconsistent," said Virginia coach Debbie Ryan.

Each team made 53 percent of its field goal attempts and Penn State held a 13-3 edge on free throws in the first half, which ended with the Lady Nittany Lions leading 47-40.

Penn State then had a 14-8 foul shooting advantage in the second half as Virginia cooled from 53 percent (16-of-30) to 9-for-28 from the field.
