BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Detrina White had 24 points and 11 rebounds as LSU beat Evansville 78-69 Saturday night in the first round of the women's NCAA West Regional.

Marie Ferdinand added 16 points for LSU (21-7), which finished second in the Southeastern Conference. April Brown added 13 points and Latasha Dorsey 11 for the Lady Tigers.

Evansville, the Missouri Valley champion, was making its first postseason appearance ever. The Lady Aces (19-11) were led by Shyla McKibbon, who had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Shinko Ono scored 13 points and Latasha Austin 12.

The Lady Tigers led by as many as nine in the first half, taking a 27-18 lead on Brown's 15-footer from the left side. With 2:40 to go, LSU moved ahead 34-28 on Keisha James' steal and layup. But the Lady Aces pulled to 34-33 on Ono's third 3-pointer of the half and took their first lead with 34.6 seconds left when McKibbon hit two free throws.

LSU, playing on its homecourt, regained the lead when White followed her own miss with a short shot from the right side for the Lady Tigers' 36-35 lead at halftime.

LSU opened the second half with a 12-3 burst that continued into a 20-7 run, including eight points by White in the first 4:10, to move ahead 56-42.

But after an official timeout at 13:54, Evansville scored the next six points to close the gap to 56-48.

With 11:54 left, LSU scored the next seven points, five by Ferdinand, to go up 63-48, its biggest lead. The closest Evansville got again was 71-65 on a three-point play by McKibbon with 3:18 left.
