UCLA prevails Bruin hold off Wisconsin-Green Bay 76-69Posted: Sunday March 14, 1999 02:38 AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- LaCresha Flannigan scored 16 points, including seven in a decisive two-minute stretch of the second half, as UCLA defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 76-69 Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA West Regional. The Bruins (24-7), seeded third in the West, advanced to a second-round game against sixth-seeded Kentucky on Monday night at Pauley Pavilion. The Wildcats defeated Nebraska 98-92 earlier Saturday. Chari Nordgaard, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference player of the year, led the Fighting Phoenix (19-10) with 27 points. Maylana Martin, the Pac-10 player of the year, led four Bruins in double figures with 18 points. Erica Gomez added 14 points and 6-foot-4 Janae Hubbard had 12 points. Wisconsin-Green Bay used a 22-9 run at the start of the second half to cut its 21-point deficit to five with 10:25 remaining. Nordgaard scored 13 points in the spurt that seemed to drain the Phoenix. UCLA then ran off nine straight points, pushing its lead to 14. Flannigan had seven of the Bruins' points, including a basket off a steal of a pass intended for Nordgaard and a 3-pointer. Nordgaard tossed a pass out of bounds and Stacy Krueger rebounded a UCLA miss only to throw the ball out of bounds as the Bruins held to a 14-point lead with five minutes left. The Phoenix made a late run, scoring seven straight, capped by a 3-pointer from Amanda Leonhard to get within seven with under a minute left.
