Bruins defeat Kentucky to advance to the West Regional

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Marie Philman scored 10 of her 16 points in a 29-10 second-half run to help UCLA defeat Kentucky 87-63 Monday night in the second round of the NCAA West Regional.

The third-seeded Bruins (25-7) advanced to a regional semifinal against No. 2 seed Colorado State at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Saturday.

LaTonya McDole led Kentucky (20-10) with 16 points. Laura Meadows added 15.

Maylana Martin, the Pac-10 Conference player of the year, led the Bruins with 21 points, including hitting all 15 of her free-throw attempts. UCLA was 32 of 34 from the foul line.

The Bruins trailed by 10 early in the game, then outscored Kentucky 32-12 to end the half ahead by 10. The Wildcats managed just four field goals in the final 12:51 of the half.

Kentucky came out quickly in the second half, scoring six straight points to pull within four. But the Bruins responded with another big run, outscoring the Wildcats 29-10 to put the game out of reach.

With 6-foot-4 center Janae Hubbard and guard Erica Gomez in foul trouble, Martin steadied the Bruins with six straight points to put them back up by 10. Philman fought her way inside against Kentucky's defense for three baskets despite picking up her third foul in the process.

Hubbard scored off a miss and Philman stole the ball and fed Hubbard inside. Philman's three-point play ended the spurt with UCLA ahead 63-40. Hubbard finished with 13 points.

Kentucky center Dana Owens fouled out with 9:27 remaining, leaving the Wildcats without the height to hold off Hubbard, and they never got closer than 21 the rest of the game.
