Consolation prize Brown's 34 points carry Xavier to third-place finishPosted: Thursday March 25, 1999 08:07 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- Lenny Brown's final game for Xavier turned into his best as he scored a career-high 34 points and led the Musketeers to a 106-75 rout of Oregon in the NIT consolation game on Thursday. Brown, a 6-foot-2 guard who missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer in Tuesday night's 79-76 semifinal loss to Clemson, was on target from the start against the Ducks. He finished with six 3-pointers in 10 attempts, and Xavier hit on 13-of-29 from 3-point range. Unlike their last game, when the Musketeers trailed by 24 points before rallying to make it close, comebacks were not needed against the Ducks (19-13). Brown, who set school records for 3-pointers in a season (104) and career (236), opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and the Musketeers poured it on early and late. His final two 3-pointers, followed by a driving layup with 5:59 left, pushed Xavier's lead to 92-64, and coach Skip Prosser took his star out of the game. Brown was 10-of-15 from the field and hit all eight of his free throws. James Posey and Maurice McAfee added 17 points apiece for Xavier (25-11), while Terik Brown and Frederick Jones had 14 each to lead Oregon, which was trying for its first 20-win season in 23 years. Darius Wright chipped in with 13 points for the Ducks, who lost their semifinal game to California. Xavier's quickness was too much for Oregon. McAfee had three 3-pointers early in the first half as Xavier used a 15-2 run to open a 31-10 lead just 9:35 into the game. Xavier led 45-29 at the half, and the Ducks cut the margin to 63-52 after a 3-pointer by Yasir Rosemond with under 13 minutes to go. But Brown made two free throws and Posey hit a 3-pointer and the lead was back up to 16 points.
