34-2, 16-2 Big East (national champion)
Coach
Jim Calhoun, 304-120 (13 years); 554-257 overall(27 years)
Projected starting lineup
G Khalid El-Amin, 5-10, Jr.
His 13.8 scoring average could go up with no Richard Hamilton.

G Albert Mouring, 6-3, Jr.
could see increase from last year's 19 minutes per game;

C Jake Voskuhl, 6-11, Sr.
Averaged 6.4 rebounds during title draft.

F Kevin Freeman, 6-7, Sr.
Won a gold medal last summer at World University Games.

F Edmund Saunders, 6-8, Jr.
Should see 4.7 rebound average go up.

Top guy off the bench
C Souleymane Wane, 6-11, Sr.,
Sees a lot of time when Voskhul is in foul trouble.
Key Newcomer
C Ajou Ajou Deng, 6-11, So..
Academic redshirt from Sudan has also spent time in London.
Key Games
Jan. 10 vs. Texas
Feb. 5 at Michigan State
Outlook
Losing guard and defensive stalwart Ricky Moore hurts almost as much as losing star forward Richard Hamilton, but UConn is one of America's truly elite programs now, and help is on the way. For the Huskies not to win the Big East and go very deep in the NCAAs would be an upset, but El-Amin must remain healthy and a bit more offense from Voskuhl, an underrated role player who shone in the Final Four, wouldn't hurt. The Huskies will again look to play their up-tempo style, and few teams will be equipped to slow them down. But even if someone does, Connecticut has the savvy to play a half-court game, even though it's not Calhoun's preference.
