Southern Mississippi
1998-99 record
14-16 overall, 6-10 C-USA
Coach
James Green, 48-42 (three years)
Projected starting lineup
G Earl Flowers, 6-1, Sr.
Started 10 games last season and led Southern Miss with 50 steals.

G Mel Cauthen, 6-0, Jr.
Started 13 of 30 games last season and led the Eagles with 97 assists.

C Carlos Booker, 6-11, Sr.
He swatted 58 shots last season but needs to be more of a scorer after averaging 5.8 points.

F Vandarel Jones, 6-9, Sr.
As shot 67 percent from the field over the last two seasons, including 71.3 percent as a sophomore.

F Carl Henderson, 6-8, Jr.
Averaged 19.9 points and 9.9 rebounds at Pensacola Junior College last season and should add an immediate scoring boost.

Top guy off the bench
G Tobias Brinkley, 6-4 Fr.
A redshirt last season, Brinkley has the ability -- albeit unproven -- to bust zones with his outside shooting.
Key Newcomer
C Michael Palmer, 6-9, Dyer, Tenn.
Might be the first post player off the bench. Averaged 17 points and 12.2 rebounds as a senior at Gibson County High School.
Key Games
at Auburn (Dec. 30). One of the only nonconference heavies on the schedule. A nice measuring stick.
vs. Tulane (Jan. 15). All intradivisional games are important, but this is probably the most heated given the teams' close proximity.
Outlook
Last season the Golden Eagles' main objective was getting the ball to Mr. Everything, Neil Reed, who took 25.1 percent of the team's shots and averaged 18.1 points per game. After one rocket season, the former Indiana guard is gone, along with three other starters. Green brought in seven newcomers, who will have to look to score because Flowers and Cauthen generally don't. Henderson could have a break-out year.
