F Tremaine Gardiner, 6-5, Sr. Started every game last year and was the 49ers' leading returning rebounder (6.4 per game). F KenKay Jones, 6-9, Jr. An athletic forward who shot 61 percent from the floor in junior college and should fill the role of enforcer. G Kedric Smith, 5-11, Sr. Averaged 8.3 points in four C-USA tourney games and can play the point to allow Guevara to play shooting guard. F Damion Walker, 6-7, Sr. Only reliable post player on a seriously-undersized squad. G Diego Guevara, 6-1, Jr. Was the 49ers' second-leading scorer (12.5 ppg) last season, with 58 percent of his points coming from three-point range. G Jobey Thomas, 6-4, So. Led Conference USA in three-point shooting in league games (.473).

Top guy off the bench

G Dalonte Hill, 6-6, So. Missed last season after having arthroscopic knee surgery in September.

Jan. 22, at Louisville, The 49ers capped their four-wins-in-four-days C-USA tourney victory by beating the Cardinals. Feb. 3 vs. Cincinnati, In a poll of Charlotte fans, they said they hate the Bearcats more than any other team.

Outlook

The 49ers ripped through the C-USA Tournament last season, winning four games in four days. Lutz neutralizes opponents by constantly switching defenses, often going from zone to man to box-and-one on successive defensive possessions. This season UNCC will rely heavily on perimeter shooting with Gardiner responsible for crashing the boards. Look for the 49ers to make their fourth straight NCAA Tournament.
