Baylor Bears

Bliss bringing things together in Waco

Last season

14-15, 4-12 Big 12

Coach

Dave Bliss (second season, 14-15; 479-286 overall)

Projected starting lineup

G DeMarcus Minor, 6-4 Sr.
Finished third in the Big 12 in assists, with 5.83 per game; finished .02 minutes per game off the league record.

G Wendell Greenleaf, 6-2 So.
Came on late, averaging 6.9 points in the final nine games.

F Terry Black, 6-5, Sr.
A versatile forward who led the Big 12 in steals (2.66 per game) and ranked seventh in rebounds (7.7 per game).

F Greg Davis, 6-9, Jr.
Transfer sat last season after playing 55 games for Bliss at New Mexico.

C John Flippen, 7-2, 290.
Slow as molasses big man worked on agility this summer; broke Big 12 tourney record with eight blocks vs. Nebraska.

Top guy off the bench

G/F Chad Elsey, 6-6, Jr.
Once eligible, this Southern Methodist transfer should fit right into Bliss' gunning offense; averaged 13.4 points at SMU in '98-'99.

Key games

vs. St. Edwards (Dec. 9). All of the Bears' non-league games are shameful. This may be the worst of the lot.
vs. Colorado (Jan. 6). This Big 12 opener should go a long way towards showing whether that shameful slate has helped or hurt.
vs. Kansas (Feb. 12). Baylor gave the Jayhawks a surprisingly close game in Lawrence a year ago.

Outlook

The Bears aren't quite there yet. Aside from Black and Minor, no one on this team has proven he can excel in the Big 12. But that doesn't mean the Bears don't have people nervous. Before arriving in Waco, Bliss had averaged 25.5 wins in his final four seasons at New Mexico. He's also got three more transfers coming down the pike behind Davis -- Elsey becomes eligible Dec. 16 and ex-Lobos Kevin Henry and R.T. Guinn next year. In the meantime, the Bears will have to feast on the creampuffs early, because they may starve for wins later.
