Cincinnati Bearcats

Huggins sticks to tried-and-true formula

Last season

29-4, 16-0 C-USA (NCAA second round, lost to Tulsa)

Coach

Bob Huggins (12th season, 276-86, 444-158 overall)

Projected starting lineup

G Kenny Satterfield, 6-4, Jr.
Point guard is perhaps the quickest player in C-USA. Had 178 assists and averaged 9.2 points, but must improve his perimeter shooting.

G Steve Logan, 6-0, Jr.
Will play the point when Satterfield doesn’t. An outstanding shooter (.417 on threes) but size sometimes causes mismatches at off-guard.

C Donald Little, 6-10, So.
Hidden in Kenyon Martin’s shadow last year, but is athletic and quick and could surprise this season.

F Antwan Jones, 6-8, Jr.
Tallahassee CC transfer (19.1 scoring average) is being counted on for big offensive contributions, but will miss first month or so with a stress fracture.

F Jamaal Davis, 6-8, Jr.
Another JC transfer who should add muscle (he’s a solid 230 pounds), rebounding and defense at power forward.

Top guy off the bench

F Rod Flowers, 6-8, Fr.
An outstanding prep rebounder who will probably start while Jones recovers.

Key games

Charlotte (Jan. 6). An early chance to see whose new guys are the best.
Wake Forest (Jan. 27). Excellent TV matchup between C-USA and the ACC.
at DePaul (Mar. 3). Could decide the American Division.

Outlook

The old line about reloading instead of rebuilding fits this team perfectly. Huggins may have lost NBA first rounders Kenyon Martin and DerMarr Johnson, but this isn't the first time he's faced this situation. Once again, he's gone to the juco ranks to lessen the losses, and could come out with another conference champion. What is a rarity for Huggins is that his team's strength, for once, is its backcourt, with Satterfield, Logan and talented backup Leonard Stokes. Replacing Martin and Jermaine Tate up front is near impossible, but Little is no slouch, and 6-11 B.J. Grove has already shown flashes in limited duty.
