Memphis Tigers

Night-and-day difference from a year ago

Last season

15-16, 7-9 C-USA

Coach

John Calipari (1st season; 193-71 overall)

Projected starting lineup

G Courtney Trask, 6-3, So.
A C-USA all-freshman pick after averaging 9.4 points and 4.6 assists. A steady outside shooter who got better as the season progressed.

G Marcus Moody, 6-5, Sr.
Solid if unspectacular, Moody averaged 10.8 points and had 75 assists. Needs to improve his shot selection after hitting 36.5% .

C Earl Barron, 6-11, So.
Expected to be improved over a freshman season that saw him average 17 minutes and 5.6 points. That could take inside pressure off of Kelly Wise.

F Kelly Wise, 6-10, Jr.
Simply put, a force inside. Wise averaged 14.5 points and 8.6 rebounds, and his 119 career blocks are already eighth on the Memphis list.

F Shannon Foreman, 6-5, Sr.
A JC transfer who had made a significant contribution (7.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg), but could be pushed for playing time by several other players.

Top guy off the bench

F Paris London, 6-8, Jr.
London, who shed 20 pounds, is one of those "other players," and should get more than 14.7 minutes a game this year.

Key games

Temple (Nov. 17). The Calipari Era tries to get off to a fast start.
at UAB (Jan. 27). First really tough division road game; UAB won by 27 last year.
South Florida (Feb. 25). Like we said, division title could be on the line.

Outlook

The change in attitude in the Tiger program from last year to this year is astonishing. The embarrassment of Tic Price's exit just before last season has faded into a burst of optimism with Calipari's arrival. He's recruiting like crazy, but he also stepped into a good situation. With 83% of its scoring and 91% of its rebounding back, Memphis is a title contender. Add to that mix a key recruit in juco standout John Grice and the Tigers should be substantially improved right away.
