Oklahoma State Cowboys

New-look team has some growing up to do

Last season

27-7, 12-4 Big 12 (NCAA quarterfinals, lost to Florida)

Coach

Eddie Sutton (11th season, 229-95; 659-259 overall)

Projected starting lineup

G Maurice Baker, 6-1, Jr.
Honorable mention juco All-America can score, pass and rebound.

G Victor Williams, 5-10, So.
Started 25 games for Illinois State on the way to 1998-99 Missouri Valley freshman of the year honors.

F Terrence Crawford, 6-6, Fr.
Top prospect in Oklahoma led his high school to its third straight state title last year.

F Andre Williams, 6-7, So.
Lean, athletic, with tons of potential; missed time last year because of NCAA investigation that also involved JaRon and Kareem Rush.

F Fredrik Jonzen, 6-10, Jr.
Slender Swede came on during NCAA run; 9.2 points ranked fifth on team, but that's the highest of any returnee.

Top guy off the bench

F Antoine Broxsie, 6-9, Jr.
Minnesota transfer has 7-foot-3 wingspan; missed most of redshirt year with a knee injury.

Key games

vs. Arkansas (Dec. 2 at Tulsa). Sutton faces the team he coached from 1975-85.
at Kansas (Feb. 10). All Big 12 contenders must run through Roy's boys.
at Oklahoma (Mar. 3). Final regular-season game could tilt Big 12, NCAA seeding.

Outlook

At 64, Sutton must be wondering if he's running a basketball team or a nursery. He's lost 81.9 percent of his scoring and 70.3 percent of his rebounds -- eight letterwinners in all, including Desmond Mason, Brian Montonati, Joe Adkins and Doug Gottlieb. Even the old Gallagher-Iba Arena is gone, replaced by a newer, larger version. Sutton will be the first to admit that things could look rocky at first for his seniorless squad, but aside from Arkansas and UNLV, the early season provides enough patsies for this infant team to learn to walk. Whether the Cowboys can run in the Big 12 remains to be seen, but don't bet against a coach with eight 20-plus victory seasons in Stillwater.
