South Florida Bulls

Last season

17-14, 8-8 C-USA (NIT first round, lost to New Mexico)

Coach

Seth Greenberg (fifth season, 56-60, 161-130 overall)

Projected starting lineup

G Reggie Kohn, 6-1, So.
Tough point who developed rapidly as a freshman, averaging 7.6 points with 117 assists. Limited offensively to long-range scoring.

G/F Altron Jackson, 6-6, Jr.
He's actually a wing and can play inside and out, as he did last year as one of the nation's best sixth men. Averaged 18.2 points and can score from anywhere.

C Mike Bernard, 6-10, Jr.
A 270-pound load out of Coffeyville (Kan.) CC who will provide the beef and keep B.B. Waldon from having to play in the middle.

F Cedric Smith, 6-4, Sr.
An amazing all-around player, he can score (9.8), rebound (6.6), assist (3.7) and take the ball away from you (58 steals).

F B.B. Waldon, 6-8, Jr.
One of C-USA's best players, although he needs to be more consistent. Averaged 17.3 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting over 50 percent.

Top guy off the bench

Chonsey Asbury, 6-6, Sr.
Actually, he might start and let Jackson do that sixth man thing again. Asbury is the team's best perimeter defender.

Key games

at Florida State (Dec. 7). It's about winning the state--last year, Bulls won 66-55 at FSU.
vs. Southern Miss (Jan. 6). Chance to start fast in conference home opener.
at Memphis (Feb. 25). The division title could be on the line.

Outlook

This is the year the nation finds out about South Florida. Greenberg has built a deep and solid squad that will win the division and play in the NCAA tournament. It all starts with Waldon, widely considered an All-America candidate who possesses the combined scoring/rebounding ability matched only at his position by Notre Dame's Troy Murphy. The 1-2 punch of Waldon and Jackson may be the best in the conference. The key to the season will be how well Bernard can step in at center.
