Texas A&M Aggies

Team on the rise has people talking

Last season

8-20, 4-12 Big 12

Coach

Melvin Watkins (3rd season, 20-35; 62-55 overall)

Projected starting lineup

G Jamaal Gilchrist, 5-11, So.
Hits free throws (76.6 percent), plays defense (2.0 steals); steady complement King's flash.

G Bernard King, 6-4, So.
Big 12 freshman of the year scores like the former New York Knick with the same name.

F Nick Anderson, 6-6, Fr.
Consensus top 50 recruit could own the boards early.

F Keith Bean, 6-8, So.
North Carolina State transfer cut weight from 275 pounds to 241 while sitting out a season ago.

C Andy Slocum, 6-11, So.
Looked good in the off-season after starting part-time as a freshman.

Top guy off the bench

F Aaron Jack, 6-9, Sr. Compared to the rest of these kids, he should collect social secuity; hustling big man one of two Aggie seniors.

Key games

vs. North Carolina (Dec. 9 at Houston). A&M's highest-profile game in a while.
vs. Kansas State (Jan. 6). Opener could be only shot at above-.500 record in league.
at Texas (Jan. 30). Rivalry road game real test of how far Aggies have come.

Outlook

No doubt about it, Watkins can recruit. In a year or two, he will boast some backcourt if King and Gilchrist stick around, and Anderson looks like another stud up front. And then there's this year. A&M should give some teams headaches, and their talent has a modicum of buzz going in football-mad College Station. For people to talk about anything besides their potential, the Aggies need to find someone to score besides Saint Bernard. Anderson and Bean make the frontcourt more formidable. Teams had better get their licks on this team this season. They may not get a chance later on.
