Outlook
Winthrop's administration and fans breathed a sigh of relief after last offseason, when coach Gregg Marshall was a hot commodity whose name was mentioned in connection with several other job openings. Though Marshall is considered one of the country's brightest young coaches after guiding the Eagles to three straight NCAA tournaments, he wasn't hired away. That means Winthrop is the clear favorite to win the Big South title again, especially with the return of forward Greg Lewis, last year's preseason league MVP who was redshirted after suffering a foot injury. The rest of a talented team returns, including first-team All-Big South pick Marcus Stewart. Radford has been the league's most consistent program over the last decade, and the Highlanders will be in contention yet again behind the frontcourt punch of 7-0 center Andrey Savtchenko and 6-7 Corey Watkins. The duo finished one-two in the league in rebounding. Savtchenko, the MVP of the league tournament, became an unstoppable force in the league, making 57 percent of his shots in Big South games only. UNC Asheville will also contend behind guard Andrew Smith and forward Billy Allen, a Big South All-Rookie team pick a year ago.
