Outlook
Tennessee Tech got lucky last spring. Had former Tulsa coach Buzz Peterson inexplicably turned down the Tennessee job, it would have been offered to Jeff Lebo. As it turned out, Peterson is coaching the Vols and Lebo is still in Cookeville -- for now. Lebo is one of the brightest young coaches in the country, and it probably won't be too long before a larger school lures him away. Until that time, Lebo will continue his winning ways with the Golden Eagles. In his first head-coaching job, Lebo has turned Tennessee Tech into a winner. The Golden Eagles have some excellent scoring punch at the guard and wing positions in Leigh Gayden, Brent Jolly, DeAntoine Beasley and Joey Westmoreland, all returning starters. Tech will miss departed center Larrie Smith, but Damien Kinloch, who had been a part-time starter at South Carolina and is now eligible after transferring, should step right in. Perennial league power Murray State returns four starters and also mined the junior college ranks for talent. The result is a deep team that will once again contend for the league title. Eastern Illinois' great comeback against Austin Peay in the OVC Tournament championship game earned the Panthers an NCAA Tournament bid a year ago. Three starters return from that team, including Henry Domercant, the nation's No. 4 scorer a year ago. Jan Thompson, a 6-11 center, and Todd Bergmann, a 6-8 senior, provide size in the frontcourt.
