Outlook
Gonzaga keeps rolling along. The darlings of the NCAA tournament the last three years return three starters, including the league's best backcourt in 6-0 senior point Dan Dickau, an All-American candidate, and 6-4 shooter Blake Stepp, last year's WCC freshman of the year. Both are great shooters, and Dickau is one of the smartest, craftiest guards in the country. Up from, junior Zach Gourde will be asked to carry a heavier load after the graduation of Casey Calvary and Mark Spink. Freshman Dustin Villepigue has a chance to contribute in the frontcourt. If Gonzaga has the league's best guard tandem, San Franciso has its best frontcourt, with 6-9 Darrell Tucker and 7-0 Hondre Brewer. Tucker led the Dons in scoring and rebounding a year ago, while Brewer blocked a WCC-record 114 shots and enters his final season with 201 career blocks, just six short of the league record of 207 held by Gonzaga's Calvary. Santa Clara has a potential star at guard in sophomore Kyle Bailey and plenty of depth in the backcourt. Center David Emslie will be counted on to improve his numbers and become a scoring option in the post. Pepperdine gets a new coach, former NBA star Paul Westphal, but loses considerable talent, including NBA draft pick Brandon Armstrong. Guard Craig Lewis will be asked to pick up a lot of the scoring load.
