Disturbing loss Police fire tear gas as Indiana fans get rowdyPosted: Tuesday April 02, 2002 2:46 AMBLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Police fired tear gas into a crowd of Indiana fans early Tuesday when students began throwing bottles at officers after Maryland defeated Indiana in the NCAA tournament. Students threw bottles and other objects at officers who waded into the crowd to clear a path for fire crews to put out a small blaze. After the tear gas was fired, hundreds of students fled from the area near the edge of campus. Police were seen making scattered arrests. Even before the end of Maryland's 64-52 win, the students and Hoosiers fans had become rowdy, with reports of bottles being thrown at cars passing by an off-campus apartment complex. Police shut down intersections in downtown Bloomington at about 11:15 p.m., before fans spilled out of bars, houses and dorms to share their disappointment. Minutes later, vandalism reports began pouring in, starting with a trash fire near an apartment complex and students setting ablaze couches, trash bins and others items. Street signs were torn down and post office deposit boxes were toppled. A few minor injuries were reported, the most severe a man who fell unconscious man after being hit in the head with a brick. Indiana State police spokeswoman Jackie Taylor said comparatively few students in the crowd were causing problems. "You've got one or two kids causing a problem and a couple more shouting," she said. "It draws attention to the crowd."
