Kansas coach doesn't believe UNC's Doherty will be fired

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kansas coach Roy Williams doesn't put much credence in rumors that North Carolina coach Matt Doherty will be fired after the Tar Heels didn't make the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

Williams was offered the North Carolina job three years ago and turned it down.

"I've already had that crossroad. I haven't thought about it since," he said Friday. "North Carolina has a coach that I care about greatly. That's where I'm going to leave it. I don't know what the criticism is."

North Carolina players met Thursday with athletic director Dick Baddour to discuss the future of the program and Doherty. More meetings were planned for Friday.

"I'm not trying to avoid the stuff, I just don't know," said Williams, a North Carolina graduate. "I'm one of these guys that expects them to have the same coach forever."

The Tar Heels lost to Georgetown in the NIT Wednesday and finished 19-16.
