- The NCAA doesn't keep official standings for independent teams. Blue Ribbon's preseason rankings merely rate and compare the six colleges playing as independents.
- The greatest player loss from last season was Texas-Pan American's Mire Chapman. He was our preseason choice as independent player of the year, and by finishing third in the nation with a 26.2-point scoring average, he earned that postseason recognition as well. This year, a trio of playersCentenary's Andrew Wisniewski, Corpus Christi's Brian Evans and UTPA's Kevin Mitchell--could vie for independent top honors.
- New to the independent ranks as full-fledged Division I members this year are Savannah State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, IPFW (Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne). They have plenty of hyphens in their names, and skilled players on the court.
- The only new coach of an independent team is Edward Daniels Jr. at Savannah State.
