PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- No. 21 Stanford plays its second game in three days Monday when it hosts Montana in the first round of the Stanford Invitational Tournament.
After a two-week break for final exams, the Cardinal (5-1) defeated St. Mary's, 76-58, on Saturday. It was Stanford's first game since losing to North Carolina in the championship game of the Preseason NIT on November 29.
Julius Barnes scored 17 points and Justin Davis added 12 and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal, who have won 42 of their last 43 home contests against non-conference opponents.
The victory left Stanford coach Mike Montgomery two wins shy of 500 for his career.
It was the first game for the Cardinal since forward Teyo Johnson announced his decision to enter the NFL draft and withdrew from school.
Montana (3-6) is coming off Thursday's 81-69 victory over Idaho and has won three of its last four following a 1-5 start.
Freshman guard Kevin Criswell scored 28 points in his first start, one shy of his season high set in a loss last week to Gonzaga. Senior guard David Bell contributed 22 points for the Grizzlies.
Stanford won the only two previous meetings with Montana, including a 79-63 victory in the last contest during the 1988-89 campaign.
