PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- No. 21 Stanford tries to avoid a third straight home loss on Thursday when it welcomes UC-Irvine to Maples Pavilion.
Stanford (5-3) dropped games to Montana and Richmond to finish in last in its own tournament, the Stanford Invitational. The Cardinal were barely competitive in an 83-69 loss to Richmond on Tuesday.
On the same day that Stanford learned that point guard Chris Hernandez may be out for the season, it allowed Richmond to shoot nearly 60 percent (25-of-42). Matt Lottich fouled out and two other members of the Cardinal finished with four fouls, leading to 28 free-throw attempts for the Spiders.
Josh Childress scored 16 points to lead Stanford and Lottich and Julius Barnes each netted 13. The Cardinal lost both games in their own tournament for the first time.
UC-Irvine (3-2) enters with a three-game winning streak, including a 91-23 rout of Pomona Pitzer on on December 7. Matt Okoro scored 13 points as the Anteaters were able to rest their regulars against their overmatched opponents.
Stanford is 3-0 all time against UC-Irvine and the teams have not met since a 117-87 rout on December 19, 1991. The Anteaters are 9-22 all time against Pac-10 Conference opponents.
