EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- No. 15 Michigan State continues a four-game homestand Saturday night when it meets Jacksonville State at the Breslin Center.
Michigan State (7-2) improved to 5-0 at home after a 65-56 victory over South Florida last Saturday. Chris Hill and Alan Anderson each scored 12 points as the Spartans won a defensive struggle.
The Spartans got off to a fast start for a 22-4 lead as they held South Florida without a basket over the first 11:25. Michigan State held South Florida to just under 34 percent (19-of-56) shooting.
Kelvin Torbert added 10 points and eight rebounds for Michigan State, which shot only 38 percent 19-of-50. But Adam Ballinger managed only two points and two rebounds and drew criticism from coach Tom Izzo after the game.
Jacksonville State (6-1) suffered its first loss, 68-64, to Maine on Sunday. Cornelius Richardson led the Gamecocks with 20 points.
Omar Bartlett is the team's leading scorer at 16.2 points per game and also the top rebounder at 6.5.
