WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- No. 17 Wake Forest will try to remain one of the three unbeaten teams in Division I when it plays host to Elon at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum on Tuesday.
The Demon Deacons (9-0) had their closest game of the season, a 68-62 victory at Richmond, on Saturday. Wake Forest kept pace with No. 1 Duke and No. 3 Connecticut by staying undefeated.
Elon (4-6) could provide a trap for Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons might be looking ahead to their first Atlantic Coast Conference game, a date with the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
Wake Forest had little trouble with Elon last year, handing the Phoenix an 87-67 defeat here. The Demon Deacons have won 30 of the 36 all-time meetings between the in-state rivals, including 18 in a row since 1922.
At 9-0, Wake Forest is off to one of the best starts in team history. The 2000-01 Demon Deacons opened with 12 straight wins, while the school record was set by the 1926-27 team which won 15 in a row. Seven total Wake Forest teams have started with at least 10 consecutive victories.
Elon has lost five straight games and is playing the last game of a seven-game road trip. The Phoenix have not played at home since December 2. On December 21, Elon faced then-No. 14 Marquette and suffered an 89-57 loss in Milwaukee.
