HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Eighth-ranked Louisville can extend its winning streak to 14 games on Wednesday night and continue its road success when it faces Southern Mississippi in a Conference USA matchup.
Louisville (14-1, 5-0 C-USA American) has not lost since an 86-84 loss to Purdue in Indianapolis on November 30. The Cardinals' winning streak ties Florida and Michigan for the second-longest in the country behind Oklahoma State's 14-game run.
The Cardinals improved to 5-0 on the road with a 72-69 victory at Louisville on Saturday. Louisville trailed by as many as 12 points before staging a late rally and surviving a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Reece Gaines scored 22 points and Marvin Stone added 13 and 13 rebounds for Louisville, which had a rough night from beyond the arc. The Cardinals, who shoot 37 percent from beyond the arc, misfired on 21-of-27 attempts.
Gaines is averaging 18.4 points and Stone, a Kentucky transfer, chips in with 13.4 points and 8.3 rebounds. The Cardinals are 10-0 since Stone became eligible on December 18.
Southern Mississippi (9-7, 2-3 National) lost its third straight game with Saturday's 76-75 loss to Houston. Greg Johnson was one of three players to score 15 points to lead the Golden Eagles.
The teams did not meet last season. Southern Miss posted a 69-60 victory here in the last meeting between the teams on January 21, 2001. The Cardinals still lead the series, 27-11.
