SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Newly ranked No. 23 Utah hopes to remain undefeated at home and open a two-game lead over Brigham Young in the Mountain West Conference standings when the intrastate rivals meet at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Monday night.
The Utes (20-4, 8-1 MWC) have won eight straight games since losing their conference opener at San Diego State on January 18 and are one game in front of the Cougars (18-6, 7-2) atop the conference.
Last Monday, Utah edged UNLV in overtime, 86-80, behind 22 points from Tim Frost. The Utes, who have won 15 of 16 games overall, are 13-0 at home this season.
BYU has won five of six, including a 66-64 triumph over San Diego State last Monday.
Travis Hansen scored 19 points and Mark Bigelow chipped in 16 for the Cougars, who nearly blew a 14-point lead in the last 9 1/2 minutes.
Utah leads the all-time series, 117-116, and has won 15 of the last 18 meetings. The Utes defeated the Cougars on the road on January 25, 79-75.
