LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- No. 24 Memphis tries to defeat No. 16 Louisville at Freedom Hall for the second time this season on Friday when the teams square off in the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament.
Memphis (23-5) posted one of its most impressive victories here with an 80-73 victory at Louisville on February 19. Antonio Burks scored 16 points and Chris Massie collected 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Reece Gaines led Louisville with 19 points, but made just 5-of-18 shots. Freshman Francisco Garcia scored 17 points for the Cardinals, who were outrebounded, 45-29.
Memphis advanced with a 62-56 victory over South Florida on Thursday. Massie finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Rodney Carney added 18 points as the Tigers overcame 36 percent shooting.
Massie is averaging 20.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in his last five games.
"They really took us out of our game (in the first meeting) by getting to the glass and just dominating the boards," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. "Massie pays no attention to the double team. He is one of the premier power players in the nation."
Louisville is expected to be without starting center Marvin Stone, who was held out of Thursday's 82-66 victory over Tulane. Stone is being withheld from competition for the second time this season due to possible violations of NCAA rules.
Gaines and Garcia each scored 15 points and Luke Whitehead added 11 and 11 rebounds on Thursday. The Cardinals' pressure defense forced 25 turnovers.
The winner will face Alabama-Birmingham or Saint Louis in Saturday's championship.
