CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- North Carolina hopes to continue its recent success with a victory over DePaul in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
The Tar Heels (17-15) beat Duke in their regular-season finale and Maryland in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinals before falling to the Blue Devils in the semifinals.
North Carolina will be playing in the NIT for the fifth time and the first since 1974. The Tar Heels won the 1971 title.
The Tar Heels are led by Rashard McCants (16.5 points per game), Jawad Williams (14.8) and Raymond Felton (12.9).
"We are excited to still be playing in a national tournament," says Carolina head coach Matt Doherty. "This is a great opportunity for our team to continue to grow and develop, not only this year but for next season. The experience and exposure you can get by playing in the NIT are very valuable."
DePaul (16-12) finished 8-8 in Conference USA, with wins over NCAA Tournament teams Cincinnati and Louisville.
The Demon Deacons are paced by Sam Hoskin, who averages 15.3 points per game.
