NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- No. 3 Xavier tries to make 14th-seeded Troy State's first NCAA Tournament appearance a short one when they meet in a South Region first-round contest at the Gaylord Entertainment Center on Friday.
Xavier (25-5), which will be playing in its third straight and 15th overall NCAA Tournament, went 15-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference to earn its highest all-time seed.
Last year, the Musketeers defeated Hawaii in the first round of the tournament before losing to eventual Final Four team Oklahoma in the second round.
Xavier, which will be meeting Troy State for the first time, had won a school-record 16 straight games before losing to Temple in the A-10 tournament semifinals.
The Musketeers are paced by national Player of the Year candidate David West, a senior forward who is averaging 20.3 points and 12.0 rebounds, and junior guard Romain Sato, who averages 18.1 and 7.1.
Troy State (26-5) went 14-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference and defeated Central Florida in the league tournament championship, 80-69, to secure the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
The Trojans, who are in their 10th season in Division 1, have won seven straight games and 14 of 15. They are one of just six teams in the country with 26 wins, joining Creighton (29), Kentucky (28), and Pittsburgh, Weber State and Holy Cross (26).
Troy State is led by senior guard Ben Fletcher, who averages 14.2 points per game, and junior center Rob Lewin, who averages 12.3 and 8.0 rebounds.
The winner will meet either Maryland or North Carolina-Wilmington in the second round.
