BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Ticker) -- After earning its first No. 1 seed in school history, Texas commences NCAA Tournament South Region play on Friday against play-in winner North Carolina-Asheville at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
The Longhorns (22-6), who will be playing in their school-record fifth straight NCAA Tournament, reached the Sweet 16 last year.
Texas went 13-3 in the tough Big 12 Conference, finishing one game behind first-place Kansas. The Longhorns were upset in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament by Texas Tech on Friday, 92-81.
The Longhorns are 16-0 this season when holding their opponent to fewer than 70 points but 6-6 when the opponent scores at least 70.
Texas is 9-3 in NCAA Tournament first-round games since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
The Bulldogs (15-16) defeated Texas Southern in overtime in the play-in game on Tuesday, 92-84.
Andre Smith scored 10 of his 28 points in the extra session, Bryan McCullough added 15 and Alex Kragel 14 for UNC Asheville, which is playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
The Bulldogs won their conference tournament after losing their final four regular-season games.
Texas won the only prior meeting between the teams, 74-43 in Austin on December 28, 2000. Longhorns coach Rick Barnes received his first Division I coaching job from UNC Asheville's Eddie Biedenbach, an assistant coaching position at Davidson prior to the 1978-79 season.
