LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Bob Knight will try for something unfamiliar to him on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden when Texas Tech meets Minnesota - consolation.
Knight, whose Red Raiders (18-13) lost 64-63 to St. John's in the National Invitation Tournament semifinals on Monday, will face the Golden Gophers (21-13), who lost 88-74 to Georgetown.
In his illustrious career, Knight has been to the NIT eight times and made it to the semifinals six times. This will be his first appearance in the third-place game since he won it with Army in 1970 to cap a 22-6 season.
Knight is 1-2 all time in the NIT consolation game. He is fourth on the all-time list with 808 career wins and is trying to finish his season 10 games over .500 for the fourth straight season, and second in a row at Texas Tech.
Minnesota advanced to the NIT semifinals for the fourth time by defeating Saint Louis, Hawaii and Temple. On Tuesday, Minnesota allowed Georgetown to shoot 56 percent (14-of-25) in the second half and suffered an 88-74 loss.
