LAHAINA, Hawaii (Ticker) -- Luke Walton blocked a potential tying shot and swatted away the ensuing inbounds pass as No. 2 Arizona avoided a collapse and won the Maui Invitational with a 79-76 victory over eighth-ranked Illinois. Jason Gardner scored 25 points for Arizona, which nearly blew a nine-point lead in the final minute. It was rescued by Walton, who blocked a 3-pointer by Cory Bradford with 1.6 seconds remaining. The 6-8 sophomore smothered a last-ditch inbounds pass with one-tenth of a second left. The Wildcats led 74-65 with 52 seconds left before Frank Williams, who scored 27 points, nailed a pair of 3-pointers around a free throw by Jason Gardner to make it a four-point deficit. On the next possession, Williams blocked Gardner's layup and found Sean Harrington open at the top of the key for another 3-pointer that made the score 75-74 with 25 seconds to play. Illinois (3-1) made only three baskets over the first 15 minutes of the second half before rallying. Arizona (3-0) led by as many as 15 points with 3:30 to play.
