CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Troy Bell scored 27 points, hitting 14-of-16 free throws, as Boston College snapped a 23-game losing streak to No. 10 Connecticut with an 85-68 victory. Xavier Singletary added 23 points and freshman Ryan Sidney had 12 off the bench for Boston College (10-0, 1-0 Big East), which remained one of only six unbeaten teams in the country. The Eagles led 34-33 at the half and broke open the contest by shooting 68 percent (15-of-22) after the break. Connecticut (11-2, 0-1), which shot just 37 percent (12-of-32) in the second half, fell to 12-10 in Big East Conference openers. The 23 straight losses matched the longest losing streak by one conference member against another in Big East history. Syracuse defeated Seton Hall 23 times from 1982-1992. The last time Boston College beat Connecticut was on February 23, 1988. The 10-0 start equals the longest winning streak to begin a season in Eagles' history. The 1984-85 squad also won its first 10 games. Freshman Caron Butler totaled 29 points and 13 rebounds for Connecticut, which lost for just the 18th time in 139 games against New England-based schools under coach Jim Calhoun. Connecticut held a 48-47 edge with 14:02 left but a free throw by Bell sparked a 23-5 spurt over the next 7 1/2 minutes. The Huskies never got closer than 12 down the stretch and trailed by as many as 20. Boston College committed 13 turnovers while UConn had 22. The Eagles made 25-of-39 free throws while the Huskies went 17-of-27.
