BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Nat Burton's layup as time expired gave Georgetown a thrilling 63-61 first-round victory over Arkansas in a classic battle in the NCAA Tournament's West Region at the Boise State University Pavilion.

Georgetown (24-7) advanced to the second round, where it will face Hampton, a 58-57 winner over Iowa State.

With the score tied at 61-61 and 35 seconds remaining, Georgetown set up for one final shot in regulation. Burton dribbled the ball near the midcourt stripe and started his drive with less than five seconds left from the right side of the lane.

He drove to his left and released the ball with his left hand just before the shot clock expired. The ball rolled through and Burton was mobbed by his teammates on the baseline as Hoyas coach Craig Esherick celebrated at midcourt.

Officials reviewed the call and upheld their decision, giving Georgetown the victory.

Kevin Braswell led the Hoyas with 12 points while freshmam Michael Sweetney added 10 and 12 rebounds. Georgetown was playing its first NCAA Tournament game without former coach John Thompson since 1943.

Anthony Perry scored 10 points off the bench and Victor Samnick added eight. The Hoyas' reserves their Arkansas counterparts, 26-21.

Arkansas (20-11) was led by Joe Johnson, who scored 14 points. Carl Baker added 12 points for the Razorbacks, who did not trail in the second half until the final minute.

A 3-pointer from Blake Eddins gave Arkansas its largest lead at 50-43 lead with 12:35 to play.

Georgetown fought back and pulled into a 55-55 tie on a 3-pointer by Perry with seven minutes to play. Teddy Gipson responded with a bucket for a 57-55 lead with 5:35 to play.

Samnick tied it at 57-57 with a transition basket with just under four minutes left but T.J. Cleveland scored to give the Razorbacks their last lead at 57-55 with 3:20 to go.

Arkansas' Dionisio Gomez scored with 35 seconds to play to tie the score at 61-61, setting up Burton's closing heroics.

Georgetown held a 47-35 rebounding edge and scored 16 points off 18 offensive rebounds. The Hoyas overcame 40 percent (25-of-62) shooting and 11 missed free throws.

The Razorbacks, who shot 40 percent (23-of-58), fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
