DAYTON, Ohio (Ticker) -- Nick Collison scored 23 points to lead four players in double figures as Kansas won its 18th straight NCAA Tournament first-round game, topping Cal State-Northridge, 99-75, in a West Region contest.

Kansas (25-6) advanced to the second round, where it will meet Syracuse on Sunday at the University of Dayton Arena.

The Jayhawks scored 10 of the first 12 points three minutes into the game as Cal State-Northridge showed some early jitters. The Matadors fought back, however, and grabbed their first lead at 29-28 on a basket from Jeff Parris with just over seven minutes left in the half.

A 3-pointer by Jermar Welch gave Northridge its final lead at 37-35 with 4:22 to play before Kansas took control.

The Jayhawks closed the half with 17 straight points to take a 52-37 lead into the locker room. Jeff Boschee capped the burst with two free throws with six seconds to go.

Northridge (22-10) cut the lead to eight points on two occasions, the final time at 77-69 on a basket by Parris with just over eight minutes to play. But baskets by Drew Gooden and Kenny Gregory along with a 3-pointer from Kirk Hinrich gave the Jayhawks an 84-69 lead with 6:05 remaining.

Gooden finished with 20 points and Boschee added 19 for Kansas, which improved to 5-0 all-time against Big Sky Conference opponents.

Collison made 11-of-13 shots for the Jayhawks, who shot 61 percent (37-of-61). Kansas made 9-of-18 from beyond the arc, including four 3-pointers from Boschee.

The Jayhawks held a 45-24 rebounding edge as Collison and Ohio native Gregory each grabbed 11 boards.

Parris scored 18 points off the bench and John Burrell added 16 for Northridge, which defeated Eastern Washington for the Big Sky title on March 10. Brian Heinle had 13 points for the Matadors, who were facing Kansas for the first time.

Markus Carr had nine points and 10 assists, the latter being a tournament high thus far. Heinle, the Big Sky Player of the Year, made just 4-of-17 shots as he found it difficult to maneuver around the Jayhawks' sizable front line.

Parris shot 9-of-12 and also grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Matadors. Northridge made 13-of-30 from beyond the arc, including four each by Burrell and Carl Holmes.
