COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- Lonny Baxter scored 25 points as sixth-ranked Maryland built a huge early lead en route to an 83-53 rout of overmatched American.

The Terrapins' best low-post player, the 6-8 Baxter scored 15 points in the first half, when Maryland raced to a commanding 48-23 advantage. The Terrapins opened a 20-point lead less than 10 minutes into the contest.

Juan Dixon added 22 points for the Terrapins (2-1), who extended their non-conference home winning streak to 79 games, the longest such streak in the country.

Brian Williams netted 15 points and Patrick Doctor 13 for American (0-1), which was playing its season opener.

In their final campaign at Cole Fieldhouse before moving into a new arena next season, the Terrapins flashed back to the 2000-01 campaign before the opening tip when a banner commemorating Maryland's initial trip to the Final Four was unveiled.

The Terrapins then flashed some of that form from last season, racing to a 10-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest.

Baxter and the Terrapins continued to dominate. The senior forward scored six points in the lane and Dixon had five in a 15-0 burst that provided a 27-6 cushion with 11 minutes left in the half.

Baxter made 11-of-20 shots and Dixon made 8-of-17, including 4-of-10 attempts from 3-point range.

Meanwhile, the Eagles struggled from the field, shooting a woeful 29 percent (18-of-63). They also committed 16 turnovers and were outrebounded, 58-43.

The 1-2 punch of Baxter and Dixon continued to dominate in the second half, combining for the Terrapins' first 13 points as UM built a 61-28 advantage with just under 15 minutes remaining.
