EUGENE, Oregon (Ticker) -- Frederick Jones scored 28 points and Chris Christoffersen added 14 and 15 rebounds as Oregon raced to an early lead and coasted past No. 13 UCLA, 91-62, in a Pac-10 Conference matchup. Luke Ridnour scored 12 points and Robert Johnson and Luke Jackson added 11 apiece for Oregon (16-5, 8-2 Pac-10), which improved to 12-0 at home. That's the second-best start in school history, surpassed only by the 1937-38 squad, which went 16-0 at home. "The team played outstanding," Oregon coach Ernie Kent said. "We are a good basketball team, we worked extremely hard, stepped up to center stage and performed." T.J. Cummings had 15 points and Billy Knight 14 for UCLA (14-6, 6-4), which had won all but 18 of the previous 89 meetings. "We didn't play with any poise or purpose offensively," UCLA coach Steve Lavin said. "We didn't have the necessary intensity at the defensive end of the floor." Oregon settled matters early, scoring 14 of the first 18 points in the contest. Christofferesen had six points and Johnson four in the spurt. UCLA got within 16-10 with 12:36 to go in the opening half but a 12-2 run turned the game into a rout. Ridnour capped that spurt with a 3-pointer with 9:22 left. Oregon's lead was 20 with 5:32 to go and the the game turned into a rout as seven players had baskets for the Ducks in the half. Oregon dominated statistically over the opening 20 minutes, shooting 53 percent (16-of-30), holding a 23-16 rebounding edge and committing just five turnovers. UCLA shot 39 percent in the first half, missed four of six free throws and all nine of its 3-point attempts. Any hopes UCLA had of getting back in the game were erased quickly as Oregon opened the second half with a 20-6 burst. "We brought our 'A' game and we need to continue to bring our 'A' game," Kent added. "We are a good team and I don't know if our guys really know how good they are." "They are a great basketball team and even better on their home court," Lavin said. "This is a court where when you are playing a team like Oregon, they can get away from you in a hurry. ... Tonight we didn't give ourselves a chance to compete, let alone win." . |
