STILLWATER, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- Oklahoma State was not about to have a letdown. Ivan McFarlin scored 20 points and Victor Williams added 18 as No. 14 Oklahoma State continued its dominance over Baylor with a 77-64 Big 12 Conference victory. Coming off Wednesday's emotional victory at Texas -- coach Eddie Sutton's 700th career win -- the Cowboys (22-6, 9-5 Big 12) built a 40-29 halftime lead Saturday and withstood an early run by Baylor in the second half. "We kind of played in spurts," Sutton said. "I thought at times we played very well. At other times we did not. I'm just happy to get out with the victory." Melvin Sanders contributed 16 points for Oklahoma State, which beat the Bears for the 10th straight time and improved to 16-1 all-time against them at home. Freshman Lawrence Roberts had 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Bears (14-13, 4-10), who suffered their 16th straight road loss dating back to a victory over Kansas State on January 13, 2001. Baylor is 0-9 on the road this season. "I think the game was decided in the first eight minutes," Baylor coach Dave Bliss said. "It is difficult to simulate the quickness of Oklahoma State. We got caught at the start with a lot of turnovers that gave them a great offensive opportunity. Once we got our sea legs and got a little more climatized, I thought we competed." After falling behind by double digits, the Bears attempted a rally to start the second half, using a 12-5 run -- all on 3-pointers -- to pull within 44-41 with 15:35 remaining on a 20-footer by Greg Davis. The Bears converted on 8-of-18 attempts from 3-point range. But they shot just 38 percent (25-of-66) overall, made only 6-of-12 free throws and committed 13 of their 19 turnovers in the first half. "They really hung in there, and they've got the best shooting team in the league as far as going out and playing horse," Sutton said. "If you go take their ten players and put them against any ten players in the league, I guarantee they're going to win." It was still a six-point game with under 10 minutes left when the Cowboys re-established control. McFarlin hit a short jumper, igniting a 9-2 run that he capped with a tip-in, making it 61-48 with 6:37 to play. Oklahoma State led by double digits thereafter. Led by McFarlin, who made 10-of-15 shots and grabbed 14 rebounds, the Cowboys got some nice production from their frontcourt. Center Fredrik Jonzen had 12 points and 10 rebounds. McFarlin talked about playing against Roberts, who he battled on many occasions growing up in the Houston area. "He knows my game and I know his," McFarlin said. "We've been playing together ever since junior high school and played on the same AAU team. He's a great player, to be a freshman and making a debut in the Big 12 like he is, you have to give him a lot of credit." Roberts got it done inside for the Bears, who also received a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds from R.T. Guinn. Early on, it looked as though the Cowboys would run Baylor out of Gallagher-Iba Arena, building a 17-6 lead on a fastbreak layup by Williams. Oklahoma State led by at least seven points the rest of the half before settling for an 11-point lead at the break. Cowboys guard Maurice Baker, who has been nursing an ankle injury, missed his only three shots and went scoreless in 14 minutes off the bench. |
