WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The new kid on the block will have to wait another year. Patrick Whearty was credited with a basket on a goaltending violation in the final minute and Holy Cross made its free throws down the stretch to edge American, 58-54, in the championship game of the Patriot League tournament. Holy Cross (18-14) earned its second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament under coach Ralph Willard. American (19-11) relocated to the Patriot League from the Colonial Athletic Association this season and was seeking its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. But the Eagles missed several good chances to go ahead after the goaltending call on Keith Gray put the Crusaders ahead for good at 52-51. Glenn Stokes missed a wide-open jumper with 26 seconds left for the Eagles before Brian Wilson of Holy Cross sank a pair of free throws. American's Steven Miles had a chance to tie it, but his long jumper went off the top of the backboard. Wilson and Ryan Serravalle each sank two more throws to increase the lead to 56-51. Stokes hit a 3-pointer with one second left to cap the scoring for the Eagles. |
