KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Bob Knight was the picture of serenity while Eddie Sutton could only express exasperation. Exhibiting Knight's stifling man-to-man defense to perfection, Texas Tech held 13th-ranked Oklahoma State to its lowest point total of the season and rolled to a 73-51 rout in the Big 12 Conference tournament quarterfinals. Andre Emmett scored 23 points to lead Texas Tech (23-7), which will meet top-ranked Kansas in the tournament semifinals on Saturday. Despite the loss, Oklahoma State (23-8) will likely receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. The normally volatile Knight was serene from the outset. His friend Bob Hammel, the co-author of Knight's upcoming autobiography, was resting comfortably Friday in a St. Louis hospital after collapsing while watching Texas Tech's win over Texas A&M on Thursday. It also helped that the Red Raiders played perhaps their best game of the season, suffocating Oklahoma State, which shot 25 percent from the field in the first half and 34 percent for the game. "I really think playing yesterday was a real advantage for us because we knew what to expect in terms of playing in this atmosphere," Knight said. Andy Ellis scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half when Texas Tech built a 30-17 lead. Oklahoma State's starting five converted just 3-of-20 shots in the half. The Red Raiders shot a sizzling 64 percent in the second half and led by as many as 25 points. The game matched coaches Knight and Sutton, who each have more than 700 wins and split the two regular season meetings. But Knight's trademark defense clearly dominated the rubber game. Two layups by Kasib Powell, who finished with 18 points, and a basket by Will Chavis gave Texas Tech a 6-0 lead. After four missed shots and two turnovers, Oklahoma State scored its first points on a 3-pointer by Terrence Crawford 4:28 into the game. Texas Tech closed the half with a 9-1 run to increase its advantage to 30-17. Emmett hit a pair of baskets, Nathan Doudney connected on a 3-pointer and Ellis added a dunk to highlight the run. Emmett converted a 3-pointer and two baskets as the Red Raiders opened the second half with an 11-4 spurt to increase the lead to 41-21. A pair of free throws by Michael Marshall gave Texas Tech its biggest lead at 71-46 with 1:47 left. |
