LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Rick Majerus may have bled for the victory but he will have to swallow a painful defeat. Dalron Johnson scored 21 points as Nevada-Las Vegas advanced to the championship of the Mountain West Conference with a 76-70 victory over Utah, which saw Majerus have several displays of embarrassing behavior. UNLV (20-9) advanced to meet San Diego State in Saturday night's title game. Majerus was apparently hit by an object from the pro-UNLV crowd at the Thomas & Mack center with 10:19 remaining. The portly coach, who had a gash on his forehead, went berserk and yelled at everyone in sight, including the referees, the public address announcer and other game personnel at the scorer's table. Majerus was hit with a technical foul, which lifted his team a bit. Jeff Johnsen nailed a 3-pointer for a 46-45 advantage with just under 10 minutes left. Trace Caton scored five straight points as the Utes built a 56-51 lead with just under seven minutes left. UNLV rallied and took the lead for good on Lou Kelly's 3-pointer for a 62-59 advantage with 4:11 remaining. Jevon Banks scored for a 68-61 lead. Johnsen had a four-point play to draw Utah within three, but Vince Booker nailed a 3-pointer for a 71-65 lead with 57 seconds left. All that was left was one final explosion by Majerus, who knocked over a cup at the scorer's table with 39 seconds to go. He walked all the way to halfcourt to argue a call until his assistants forced him back to his bench area. |
