LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Steve Fisher's transformation of San Diego State is complete.

Randy Holcomb scored 20 points as San Diego State captured the Mountain West Conference crown with a 78-75 victory over Nevada-Las Vegas.

Fisher came to Southern California two seasons ago after a successful tenure at Michigan that included a national championship and two other NCAA title game appearances.

His last NCAA appearance came in 1996. The following year, Fisher was ousted after a messy situation involving a Michigan booster.

San Diego State (21-11) built a 68-53 lead before UNLV rallied with nine straight points to set up a frantic finish. Al Faux split a pair from the line for a 76-73 edge with 24 seconds to go.

The teams traded turnovers before a pair of free throws by Marcus Backs cut the Rebels' deficit to one point with five seconds left. San Diego State guard Deandre Moore was fouled two seconds later.

The Rebels tried to trash-talk Moore but the Compton, California native was unfazed. He sneered at the Rebels and drained a pair for a 78-75 lead.

UNLV had one last chance, but Lou Kelly's desperation 3-pointer bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
