LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Dalron Johnson scored 26 points and Marcus Banks added 23 as Nevada-Las Vegas held off Arizona State, 96-91, to advance to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. Lou Kelly had 19 points and eight rebounds for UNLV (21-10), which improved to 7-6 all time in the NIT. Its best performance in the tournament is a second-place finish to Illinois in 1980. The Runnin' Rebels were coming off a 78-75 loss to San Diego State in the Mountain West Championship game on Saturday, which snapped a six-game winning streak. Awvee Storey scored 29 points and Curtis Millage had 21 as Arizona State (14-15) finished its season with a five-game losing streak. The Sun Devils have not won since a 69-68 triumph at UCLA on February 16. Banks snapped a 40-40 tie with a basket that keyed a 10-0 run that was capped by Chris Richardson's 3-pointer less than three minutes into the second half. A pair of free throws by Banks put the Runnin' Rebels ahead, 70-56, with 8:55 left, but Arizona State went on a 21-9 run, pulling within, 79-77, on Millage's 3-pointer with 3:32 to go. However, the Sun Devils never could pull even as UNLV converted 13-of-14 free throws. Johnson made six free throws and a jumper over that span. Arizona State fell to 3-8 all time in the NIT. |
