TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Ticker) -- Jawad Williams made sure Florida State closed its school-record homestand with a loss.

Williams scored 16 points and freshman Rashad McCants added 12 as 24th-ranked North Carolina opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with an impressive 69-48 triumph over the Seminoles.

North Carolina (7-2, 1-0 ACC) was tied at halftime with Florida State (6-2, 0-1), which was concluding an eight-game homestand, before McCants nailed a 3-pointer to put the Tar Heels ahead for good, 33-30.

UNC scored the first seven points and 30 of the first 40 in the second half and pulled away for their second straight victory following back-to-back defeats.

Tim Pickett contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds and Anthony Richardson chipped in 12 points for the Seminoles, who had won three in a row.

Pickett made just 1-of-10 3-point attempts for the Seminoles, who were 1-of-16 from the arc (6 percent).

The Seminoles limited the Tar Heels to just 36 percent from the field (28-of-77) but shot just 38 percent themselves (21-of-55). North Carolina won the rebounding battle, 46-39, and had more second-chance points, 13-6.

Neither team went to the line much, with North Carolina connecting on 8-of-12 and Florida State 5-of-7.

Florida State last won a conference opener against Wake Forest on January 4, 2000 - the same day the school's football team defeated Virginia Tech for the national championship.

The Seminoles committed 22 turnovers, which were converted into 21 points by the Tar Heels. Florida State turned 12 North Carolina turnovers into just six points.
